Adult Learners' Week
International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW)
International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) is a global celebration that recognizes, promotes, and inspires adult learning. It serves as an international movement and network that mobilizes learners and communities to actively participate in lifelong learning opportunities.
The week provides a platform for advocacy, awareness creation, and community mobilization aimed at encouraging individuals to engage in learning activities. It also serves as a global reflection of learners’ experiences, voices, and perspectives on education and lifelong learning.
IALW was first launched and celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1992 and has since grown into an annual global event observed in many countries around the world. The initiative highlights the important role societies play in advancing adult learning movements and promoting education throughout life.
In November 1999, the UNESCO General Conference officially adopted a resolution recognizing and supporting International Adult Learners’ Week. The resolution aligned the initiative with International Literacy Day and reinforced the broader vision of lifelong learning for all.
Adult Learners’ Week in Kenya
The Kenya Adult Learners Association (KALA) launched Adult Learners’ Week in Kenya in May 1998 as part of its commitment to promoting adult education and creating opportunities for reflection, empowerment, and learner participation.
The initiative was introduced to recognize the role adult learners play in national development and to strengthen efforts aimed at expanding access to Adult and Continuing Education (ACE). Despite progress made through various literacy campaigns and Education for All initiatives, many adult learners in Kenya continue to face barriers in accessing learning opportunities.
As a national learners’ organization, KALA works closely with adult learners, youth organizations, government institutions, and development partners to advance educational opportunities and improve the well-being of communities.
Since 2010, KALA, in collaboration with the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education (DACE), has organized vibrant Adult Learners’ Week celebrations in different regions across Kenya.
Objectives of Adult Learners’ Week
Adult Learners’ Week seeks to:
- Promote collaboration among literacy stakeholders and encourage support for adult education programs
- Increase awareness of the importance and value of adult education in social and community development
- Disseminate the Adult Learners’ Charter in both English and Kiswahili
- Promote cultural diversity as a tool for strengthening social cohesion
- Motivate youth and adult learners through awards and scholarship opportunities
- Empower learners with knowledge and skills in areas such as health, environmental conservation, agriculture, food security, and participation in governance
- Develop, discuss, and share Adult Learners’ Week action plans
Through this annual celebration, KALA continues to amplify learners’ voices, promote lifelong learning, and strengthen the role of adult education in transforming lives and communities across Kenya.
Milestones of Adult Learners’ Week in Kenya
Since the introduction of Adult Learners’ Week (ALW) in Kenya, KALA has consistently brought together adult learners, educators, stakeholders, and communities to celebrate and promote lifelong learning. Over the years, the initiative has played a significant role in increasing awareness and encouraging enrollment in adult literacy programs across the country.
Working closely with government agencies, development partners, and other key stakeholders, KALA has successfully coordinated and implemented Adult Learners’ Week activities that continue to strengthen Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) in Kenya.
